Alitalia – Compagnia Aerea Italiana S.p.A. (CAI) was established in 2008 by a consortium of Italian investors to acquire the assets of the bankrupt Alitalia – Linee Aeree Italiane and merge them with Air One, another struggling Italian airline. The newly formed entity retained the Alitalia brand and commenced operations in January 2009. In 2015, it was restructured as Alitalia – Società Aerea Italiana (SAI), with Etihad Airways acquiring a 49% stake. Despite these efforts, Alitalia continued to face financial difficulties and entered extraordinary administration in 2017. The airline ceased operations on October 14, 2021. Its successor, ITA Airways (Italia Trasporto Aereo), began operations on October 15, 2021, and has since become Italy's new national carrier.
